In medicine, the applications have been endless and its impact on our lives immeasurable. We can engineer genes to directly or indirectly alter living organisms or their components to produce therapeutic products. It begins with years of dedicated research to identify genes or proteins associated with a disease which could be used as drugs, drug targets or diagnostic markers. Biotechnology techniques are utilised to generate engineered biological molecules, microorganisms and cells, transgenic animals or plants. The resulting products are thereafter optimized, checked for safety and toxic side effects, and, then tested in clinical trials.
